When to Ask for Help

The signs and symptoms of a mental health disorder can be different for each person. Asking for help for yourself or a friend can be scary, but getting help can save a life. You can ask for help even if you don’t feel it is “serious.” Here are a few things that show you may need help for yourself or a friend.

  • • When everyday life seems hard

    • When you no longer find joy in things you used to

    • When you are feeling sad or down for no reason

    • When you worry a lot about things

    • When you are feeling more angry than normal

    • When you are feeling like the world would be better without you

    • When you feel like hurting yourself

    • When you experience things that are not real

    • Changes in your sleeping pattern; sleeping too much or not enough

    • Feeling tired even if you are getting enough sleep

    • Changes in your eating patterns; not wanting to eat or eating too much

    • Feeling like you are being more risky than normal

  • • When a friend is more withdrawn than normal

    • When a friend is talking about suicide or hurting themselves

    • When a friend seems like they are doing more risky things

  • It is important to remember if your friend needs help it is okay to talk to them or get them for them, but it is not your job to fix what is happening to them.

When a friend is struggling it is important to tell a trusted adult. Even if you feel like you are going behind your friend’s back, keeping them safe is the most important thing. You may offer to show them resources or go with them to get help, but never keep it a secret if a friend is suicidal. It is important to be honest that if they are not able to ask for help that you will seek it for them from a trusted adult.
